Minister Kumar grateful for Chinese government assistance to Sigatoka town amphitheatre

Thursday 12 November 2020: The Minister for Local Government Hon. Premila Kumar received a grant of $90,000 from the Chinese Government today for the completion of the Amphitheatre on the river bank of Sigatoka Town.

Minister Kumar stated that the generosity of this grant from the Chinese Government which will ensure that Sigatoka Town continues to implement its plan of beautification works. These works began with the launch of the Melrose Bridge lighting and the Hon. PM’s unveiling of the Sigatoka Stallion statue as part of Sigatoka Town Council’s FIJI 50 celebrations.

“Work on the 100 seat Amphitheatre has begun and these funds will ensure that it can be completed to a high standard and thus be used in all weathers. The Riverside Amphitheatre will attract ratepayers, tourists and visitors alike to Sigatoka riverside as a place for casual meetings; concerts and civic events; seating for river sporting events and rest and leisure,” said Hon. Kumar.

The funds from the Chinese Government will also contribute to the concreting of the new Mission Road Car Park to ensure that it has a safe and secure surface. The new car park is already increasing access to local businesses and fees collected are being used by Sigatoka Council to continue working for the ratepayers of Sigatoka.

The Amphitheatre will be complemented by the provision of a café and washroom next to the Amphitheatre and thus ensure the Sigatoka riverside is a major attraction for the town.
